ISLAMABAD: The government has agreed to retain its decision to import one million tonnes of wheat to meet the country’s domestic requirements and ensure adequate supplies in the market.
An important meeting of the Wheat Steering Committee, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, was held to review the country’s wheat requirements, availability and prevailing price situation.
During the meeting, participants agreed to maintain the decision to import one million tonnes of wheat to meet domestic demand. Officials briefed the committee on the overall wheat situation in light of the requirements and demands of the provinces.
The meeting also discussed various issues related to the availability of wheat and the country’s future requirements. Officials considered measures to ensure uninterrupted wheat supplies while taking into account the prevailing situation and demand from different provinces.
According to the steering committee, the import of one million tonnes of wheat is aimed at meeting domestic requirements and reducing price pressures in the market. The import is expected to help provide relief to consumers and ensure sufficient availability of wheat across the country.
Officials from the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, Ministry of Commerce, the governments of Sindh and Punjab, and the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) attended the meeting.
During the meeting, the government emphasized the need to continue effective measures to ensure uninterrupted availability of wheat and its supply to the public at reasonable prices.
