Karachi: In response to the devastating fire at the iconic Gul Plaza in Karachi, Governor of Sindh Kamran Tessori has announced the launch of a comprehensive free training program on fire safety for businesses, market associations, and educational institutions. The program aims to raise awareness about fire prevention, emergency preparedness, and safety measures to prevent future tragedies of a similar scale.
Governor Tessori made the announcement during his address at the convocation ceremony of Jamia Binoria Alamia, emphasizing the critical importance of fire safety and emergency management in commercial and educational spaces. He highlighted that the tragic incident at Gul Plaza, which completely destroyed the multi-storey building on the night of January 17, was a stark reminder of the consequences of inadequate safety measures and a lack of awareness about fire hazards.
“In light of the Gul Plaza tragedy, it is imperative that we equip our citizens, business owners, and market associations with the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent such incidents in the future. This free training program will provide essential guidance on fire safety, emergency response, and the management of hazardous situations,” Governor Tessori stated.
The program is designed to be accessible to all stakeholders, including trade associations, business owners, market committees, and educational institutions. The Governor specifically mentioned that all associations and market organizations interested in participating can directly contact the Governor House to register for the training sessions. The Gul Plaza fire, which broke out late on January 17, caused widespread destruction and loss of life. The blaze completely engulfed the multi-storey commercial building, trapping dozens of individuals inside. Rescue operations continued for several days, during which 71 bodies and human remains were recovered and transported to hospitals for identification. Police Surgeon Dr. Sumaiya Tariq confirmed that the identities of 22 deceased individuals have been established, six were identifiable through physical features, and 15 were confirmed via DNA testing. The incident prompted widespread public grief and criticism, raising serious questions about fire safety regulations, emergency preparedness, and enforcement of building codes in Karachi.
