Shigar (Abid Shigri): The body of Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi, who had gone missing following an accident on Broad Peak, has been recovered from beneath an avalanche by local porters after several hours of strenuous efforts.
The porters transported the body to the Broad Peak Base Camp, from where it was airlifted to Skardu by a Pakistan Army helicopter.
According to sources, local porters from Shigar—Abuzar Ali, Muhammad Bashir and Muhammad Nadeem—launched the search for Sohail Sakhi on their own initiative. Working for several hours without modern equipment, they eventually located his body buried beneath the snow.
How was Sohail Sakhi’s body found?
In a video message, one of the porters, Abuzar, said that they belonged to the Tisser area of Shigar. He explained that while they had climbed slightly above the Broad Peak Base Camp, they noticed some equipment and a shoe.
“We started digging there, thinking that perhaps someone’s body might be buried underneath,” he said.
After digging for around three hours, the porters discovered a body. The head had sustained severe injuries, and they suspected it could be Sohail Sakhi. However, identification was difficult, so they returned to the base camp and brought a guide named Amanullah to the site. The guide confirmed that the body was indeed that of Sohail Sakhi.
The porters then wrapped the body and carried it down from Broad Peak.
Renowned Pakistani mountaineer Naila Kiani also confirmed the recovery in a social media post. She said Sohail Sakhi’s body was first located by local porters Muhammad Nadeem, Muhammad Bashir and Abuzar, all of whom belong to the Tisser area of Shigar.
According to Naila Kiani, other local volunteers later joined the search and recovery effort. Together, they helped transport the body from Camp One to the Broad Peak Base Camp.
The recovery of Sohail Sakhi’s body by the local porters highlights the difficult and dangerous conditions faced by rescue teams and volunteers in the high-altitude environment of Broad Peak.
