Lahore: At least five people, including women and children, sustained burn injuries after a gas cylinder exploded in the kitchen of a house in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat area on Tuesday, rescue officials said. The incident caused panic in the neighborhood as a fire broke out following the explosion, prompting an immediate emergency response.

According to a spokesperson for Rescue 1122, the explosion occurred at a residential house located on Peco Road in the Kot Lakhpat locality. The gas cylinder reportedly exploded inside the kitchen, resulting in a sudden blaze that quickly spread within the house. Family members present at the time of the incident suffered burn injuries before the fire could be brought under control.

Rescue officials said that upon receiving information about the incident, emergency teams rushed to the scene and initiated firefighting and rescue operations. Firefighters managed to extinguish the flames, preventing them from spreading to neighboring houses, while medical teams provided first aid to the injured victims on the spot.

The injured were later shifted to nearby hospitals for further medical treatment. Hospital sources confirmed that all five victims suffered burn injuries of varying severity. Some of the injured were reported to be in stable condition, while others required more extensive medical care due to the nature of their burns. Doctors said that treatment was ongoing and that the patients were being closely monitored.

The Rescue 1122 spokesperson identified the injured individuals as 40-year-old Uzma Bibi, 22-year-old Fiza Bibi, 22-year-old Zoha, 14-year-old Kotaba, and 45-year-old Azmat. The presence of women and a minor among the injured has raised serious concerns about household safety, particularly regarding the use and maintenance of gas cylinders in residential areas.

Eyewitnesses from the neighborhood said they heard a loud blast, followed by screams for help and thick smoke emerging from the house. Several neighbors rushed to assist the affected family before rescue teams arrived, helping to evacuate the injured and control the situation as much as possible. Residents described scenes of chaos and fear, as flames briefly engulfed part of the kitchen area.

Initial assessments by rescue officials suggest that the explosion may have been caused by a gas leak or faulty equipment, though the exact cause has not yet been officially confirmed. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the explosion and to identify whether negligence, improper handling, or substandard equipment played a role.

Gas cylinder explosions in residential areas remain a recurring safety issue in major cities, including Lahore. Experts warn that improper installation, use of damaged or substandard cylinders, and lack of regular safety checks significantly increase the risk of such incidents. In densely populated urban neighborhoods, these explosions can result in severe injuries, property damage, and even loss of life.

Following the incident, Rescue 1122 officials urged citizens to take precautionary measures when using gas cylinders at home. They emphasized the importance of ensuring that cylinders are in good condition, valves and regulators are properly installed, and gas connections are regularly inspected for leaks. Residents were also advised to immediately shut off gas supplies and ventilate the area if they smell gas, rather than attempting to light stoves or electrical appliances.

Local authorities also stressed the need for greater public awareness regarding gas safety. Officials said that many accidents occur due to a lack of knowledge about safe handling practices and the widespread use of uncertified or low-quality cylinders. They called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations and regular inspections by relevant departments to prevent such incidents.

This incident adds to a growing number of domestic accidents reported across Punjab involving gas leaks and cylinder explosions, particularly during the winter season when gas usage tends to increase. In recent months, several similar incidents have been reported in Lahore and other cities, resulting in injuries and, in some cases, fatalities.

Community members have expressed concern over the repeated occurrence of such accidents and have called on authorities to take concrete steps to improve safety standards. Some residents suggested that awareness campaigns, safety training, and subsidized access to certified gas equipment could help reduce the risks faced by low- and middle-income households.

From a healthcare perspective, burn injuries can have long-term physical and psychological effects, especially on children. Medical experts emphasize the importance of immediate treatment and proper care to minimize complications such as infections and scarring. Hospitals in Lahore have specialized burn units, but doctors note that prevention remains the most effective way to address the issue.

In conclusion, the gas cylinder explosion in the kitchen of a house in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat area left five people, including women and a child, injured with burns. Prompt action by Rescue 1122 helped contain the fire and ensured that the injured received timely medical attention. However, the incident once again highlights the urgent need for improved gas safety awareness, stricter regulation of gas cylinders, and proactive measures to protect households from preventable domestic accidents.
