China Demands Immediate Release of Venezuelan President Maduro and His Wife, Urges U.S. to Stop Destabilizing Efforts

Beijing — China has strongly condemned the recent U.S. operation targeting Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, demanding their immediate release and urging Washington to cease actions aimed at destabilizing the Venezuelan government. The statement from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the U.S. intervention as a violation of international law and expressed deep concern over the use of force to apprehend and transport the Venezuelan leaders out of their country.

The ministry emphasized that disputes and political issues should be resolved through dialogue and diplomatic channels, warning against unilateral actions that undermine sovereignty and international norms. China’s call reflects growing international scrutiny of the operation, which many observers see as an escalation in U.S. attempts to influence Venezuelan politics by force rather than negotiation.

According to the Chinese statement, “The United States must immediately release President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. Efforts to destabilize Venezuela are unacceptable and contrary to the principles of international law. Dialogue and negotiation remain the only appropriate means to address political differences.”

Global Reactions

The U.S. operation has triggered condemnation from multiple countries. Russia, Colombia, and Cuba have criticized the move, highlighting concerns over interference in a sovereign nation’s affairs. Iran called for the United Nations Security Council to take immediate action and hold those responsible accountable under international law.

In the Americas, Chilean President Gabriel Boric warned that the incident in Venezuela could set a dangerous precedent. “If such operations can happen under the pretext of combating drugs in Venezuela today,” he said, “tomorrow, other nations could face similar incursions. The international community must be vigilant.”

The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres also expressed serious concern, stating that the U.S. action appears to disregard established international legal norms. He called on all parties to respect sovereignty, avoid unilateral military interventions, and pursue peaceful solutions.

U.S. Operation and Statement

The controversy began with a press conference in Florida, where U.S. President Donald Trump announced criminal charges against President Maduro and his wife, claiming that they would be transferred to New York to face legal proceedings. Trump described the operation as an “extraordinary action” carried out under his direct orders, asserting that the U.S. military displayed its air, land, and naval capabilities in an unprecedented manner.

Trump further claimed that the operation demonstrates American strength and resolve, though the move has drawn widespread international criticism for potentially violating Venezuelan sovereignty and escalating regional tensions. He also stated that until the transition of power is complete, the United States would “manage Venezuela” and allow U.S. oil companies to operate there, signaling Washington’s intent to maintain control over Venezuelan resources.

Implications for International Law and Stability

Analysts warn that the U.S. action could have far-reaching consequences beyond Venezuela. The operation has raised questions about respect for international law, norms of sovereignty, and the use of military force abroad. Experts argue that if such interventions become normalized, they may undermine global stability, increase regional tensions, and encourage similar unilateral actions elsewhere.

China’s intervention reflects its broader foreign policy stance advocating non-interference, respect for sovereignty, and adherence to international legal frameworks. By demanding Maduro’s immediate release and urging dialogue, Beijing signals that such unilateral military actions are unacceptable in the international system and could provoke retaliatory or diplomatic measures from other nations.

Context and Background

Venezuela has been a focal point of geopolitical tensions, largely due to its vast oil reserves and strategic importance in Latin America. The U.S. has repeatedly criticized Maduro’s government, imposing sanctions and attempting to exert influence over Venezuelan politics. However, the recent military operation marks a significant escalation, prompting strong reactions from global powers and international organizations.

As the situation develops, the world is watching closely, with concerns that unilateral military interventions could destabilize not only Venezuela but also neighboring countries. The international community is increasingly urging diplomacy, negotiation, and respect for sovereignty as the only sustainable means of resolving political disputes.
