Pakistan made an impressive start to its campaign at the ITF Masters World Team Championship for men aged over 45 years, defeating the United States 3-0 in the opening match held in Lisbon, Portugal.
More than 300 players from 30 countries are participating in the event, with Pakistan being represented by experienced and skilled players in both singles and doubles categories.
In the opening match, Pakistan Tennis Federation President and internationally renowned player Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi defeated Wojtek Britek in straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-3.
In the second singles match, Pakistan’s top-ranked player Aqeel Khan faced a tough challenge against John Chesworth. Aqeel secured a hard-fought victory with a scoreline of 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, confirming Pakistan’s overall triumph.
The doubles match was also highly competitive. Pakistan’s Shehryar Salamat and Hadi Hussain made a strong comeback after losing the first set and defeated Jovan West and Guillermo Cousin 1-6, 6-1, 10-6 in the deciding tie-break to complete Pakistan’s 3-0 victory.
The convincing win over the United States has given Team Pakistan strong momentum for the round-robin stage of the championship.
Pakistan will now face Canada in its second round-robin match. The winner of that contest will qualify for the knockout stage of the ITF Masters World Team Championship.
