Islamabad: The discovery of high-quality lithium in Khairpur, Sindh, has created opportunities for the establishment of a local lithium industry in Pakistan.
In a significant development toward setting up the country’s first domestic lithium industry, the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has signed an agreement with the Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (PINSTECH).
The agreement aims to develop technology for the commercial extraction of lithium from geothermal brine water following the discovery of high-quality lithium from a well located in Khairpur district, Sindh.
Officials said the initiative is expected to support Pakistan’s efforts to explore and utilize its mineral resources and could contribute to the development of a local lithium supply chain. Lithium is considered a strategically important mineral due to its wide use in rechargeable batteries, electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and modern technologies.
The scope of lithium exploration in Sindh is also being expanded, with further research planned on an additional 8 to 10 wells to assess the availability and potential of lithium resources in the region.
