Karachi: Differences have emerged between the Karachi Police and the Police Surgeon’s Office over the medical report in the death of Mir Raza, as investigators continue to examine all aspects of the case.
Speaking to Geo News, Karachi Police Chief and Additional Inspector General (AIG) Javed Alam Odho said the investigation into Mir Raza’s death was ongoing and that every aspect of the case was being thoroughly scrutinized.
The police chief said the initial medical report had been prepared by a medico-legal officer (MLO) working under the Police Surgeon. According to him, the MLO conducted the medico-legal examination of the body and submitted the report to the Police Surgeon, who retained it for two days before releasing it.
He questioned the handling of the report, saying that if there were any discrepancies or deficiencies in the findings, they should have been addressed immediately. He further stated that the Police Surgeon neither personally examined the body nor conducted the medico-legal examination, adding that the police had relied on the initial MLO report provided by the medical authorities during the early stages of the investigation.
The Additional IGP also emphasized the importance of determining whether gunpowder residue was present on the deceased’s hands. He said the Crime Scene Unit had collected evidence from the scene and handed all relevant material over to the medical team for forensic examination.
He maintained that if the Police Surgeon had any reservations regarding the medical findings or investigative process, those concerns should have been communicated to the police without delay. He also questioned why the medical team did not visit the crime scene in what he described as a high-profile case, noting that in many countries forensic medical teams routinely inspect crime scenes as part of their investigations.
The police chief said that if Mir Raza’s family wished, a fresh medical examination could be carried out. He added that investigators were also looking into the reported disappearance of a firearm from the crime scene.
According to the Additional IGP, police are continuing their search for the waste collector seen in surveillance footage near the scene. He expressed hope that recovering the missing weapon would help resolve key questions surrounding the case and assist investigators in determining the circumstances of Mir Raza’s death.
