Lahore: The Lahore High Court has dismissed a petition filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) seeking permission to hold a public rally at Minar-e-Pakistan on August 5, declaring the plea infructuous after the district administration had already decided the matter.
The petition, filed by PTI leader Mian Usman Akram, came up for hearing before Justice Mirza Waqas Rauf.
During the proceedings, the government’s counsel informed the court that the district administration had already rejected PTI’s application to hold the rally at Minar-e-Pakistan. In response, PTI’s lawyer requested that the party be provided with an alternative venue for the public gathering.
The court directed the government lawyer to immediately seek instructions from the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and inform the court whether the administration was willing to permit the rally at any location other than Minar-e-Pakistan. Justice Rauf asked the counsel to ascertain whether an alternative venue could be offered to the party.
After hearing the arguments, the court ruled that the petition had become unnecessary because the competent authority had already made its decision regarding the application. Justice Mirza Waqas Rauf observed that the court was bound to decide the matter in accordance with the law and noted that the Deputy Commissioner had already passed an order on PTI’s request for permission to hold the rally.
Consequently, the Lahore High Court dismissed the petition, bringing the legal challenge over permission for the proposed August 5 public meeting at Minar-e-Pakistan to an end.
