SUKKUR: Residents and civil society representatives have raised concerns over the alleged spread of illegal “Akra Parcha” (number betting) gambling in several parts of Sukkur, claiming that the activity is continuing openly in the jurisdictions of multiple police stations.
According to local residents, the alleged gambling operations have become particularly widespread in areas falling under the New Pind and A-Section police stations. The locations identified include Bhasa Line, Kori Hotel, Amanullah Chowk, Pathan Colony, Agha Badruddin Colony, New Pind Main Chowk, Darzi Mohalla, Shikarpur Phatak, and Micro within the New Pind police station limits.
Residents also alleged that similar activities are taking place in Tanga Stand and Shamsabad under the A-Section police station, as well as Pir Murad Shah Colony, Mirani Mohalla, and Shaikh Mohalla within the jurisdiction of the C-Section police station.
The complainants further alleged that a number of individuals are operating the betting network in these localities. These allegations have not been independently verified, and no official response from the named individuals or the police has been made public.
Residents claim that the continued operation of these alleged gambling activities has resulted in financial losses for many people, particularly young individuals, with some reportedly losing significant amounts of money. They also expressed concern that minors are being exposed to gambling and other harmful activities, which they fear could contribute to rising social problems and crime.
In addition to the alleged betting operations, local residents claimed that the open sale of products such as Gutka, Pan Prag, and access to Rhythm gaming activities have become increasingly common in certain neighborhoods. They argued that the combined presence of these activities is having a negative impact on the local community.
Political workers, social activists, and members of civil society have called on the authorities to take immediate notice of the situation. They have appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan, the Federal Interior Minister, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sukkur, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sukkur, and the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sukkur to investigate the allegations and take action against any illegal gambling operations if found to be in violation of the law.
The residents have urged law enforcement agencies to strengthen surveillance, enforce existing gambling laws, and restore public confidence by ensuring that any unlawful activities are dealt with in accordance with legal procedures.
