SUKKUR, Aug. 1, 2026: Sukkur Commissioner Abid Saleem Qureshi has directed the relevant departments to complete all repair and protection works at the Qadirpur Shank Bund within the stipulated timeframe, stressing that continuous monitoring and preparedness are essential despite the current flood situation on the Indus River remaining fully under control.

The commissioner visited the historically significant and highly sensitive protective embankment along the Indus River, accompanied by Ghotki Deputy Commissioner Manzoor Ahmed. During the visit, he reviewed the ongoing flood protection measures, repair work, and the overall condition of the bund.

Officials from the concerned departments briefed the commissioner on the progress of protective works, including the installation of protective stones and other reinforcement measures designed to strengthen the embankment against potential flood threats.

Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner Abid Saleem Qureshi described the Qadirpur Shank Bund as one of the most important and sensitive flood protection structures in the region. He emphasized that reinforcing the embankment and completing all ongoing maintenance work is crucial to ensuring public safety and minimizing risks during the monsoon season.

He instructed the concerned authorities to ensure that all repair and protection work is completed on schedule so that any future emergency situation can be managed effectively without delay.

The commissioner stated that the flood situation in the Indus River is currently completely under control, adding that the water flow remains well below dangerous levels.

According to him, the downstream discharge at Guddu Barrage is currently recorded at approximately 350,000 cusecs, a level that does not pose any immediate threat. However, he stressed that precautionary measures must continue and authorities should remain vigilant to respond promptly if river conditions change.

Commissioner Qureshi noted that although funds had already been approved for the repair of the Qadirpur Shank Bund, the project experienced delays due to various administrative and logistical reasons.

He further observed that recent global economic challenges could affect the pace of certain development projects. Nevertheless, he reaffirmed that the Government of Sindh remains fully committed to completing all ongoing infrastructure and flood protection schemes on time.

The commissioner also directed the Director of the Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority (SIDA) to ensure round-the-clock monitoring of the Qadirpur Shank Bund as well as all other protective embankments across the district. He instructed officials to further strengthen safety arrangements and ensure that all relevant departments remain fully alert to deal with any unforeseen emergency.

During the briefing, Deputy Commissioner Ghotki Manzoor Ahmed informed the commissioner that the district administration is maintaining continuous surveillance of water levels in the Indus River.

He said there is currently no flood threat to the district, but all concerned departments have been placed on alert as a precautionary measure. He added that advance contingency plans and emergency arrangements have already been finalized to ensure a rapid response if river conditions change unexpectedly.

The inspection visit was also attended by District Health Officer Dr. Rao Aftab, PPHI District Manager Arif Abbasi, Mukhtiarkar Shahid Hussain Dayo, and officials from various other government departments involved in flood management and disaster preparedness.

The visit reflects the provincial administration’s continued focus on strengthening flood protection infrastructure and maintaining preparedness during the ongoing monsoon season to safeguard lives, property, and agricultural land in vulnerable areas of Sukkur Division.
