NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said he wants to forgive those who participated in a protest at Jantar Mantar, describing them as “misguided children” and urging them to move forward constructively.
In a video statement shared on social media, Modi said the events at Jantar Mantar had been witnessed by people in India and around the world.
He said some protesters had used abusive language, which he described as inappropriate for any civilized society. According to Modi, the remarks were directed not only at him but also at his late mother.
Referring to the protesters, Modi said that people often make mistakes in their youth and should be given an opportunity to learn from them.
“It is still time to embrace them and show them the right path. These are misguided children, and it is our responsibility to guide them,” he said.
The prime minister added that punishing them or forcing them to face prolonged legal proceedings would not improve the situation.
“I want to forgive them, and I hope society will also accept this approach,” Modi said. Drawing an analogy, he added, “Sometimes we accidentally bite our own tongue and it bleeds, but we do not break our teeth. In the same way, these children are also our own.”
Modi concluded his message by inviting young people to work together for the country’s future.
“I say to the youth: come, let us move forward together for the nation, learn something new, and pursue your dreams. The country is progressing and will continue to progress. I want you to move forward with it,” he said.
The remarks came in the aftermath of the protest held at Jantar Mantar, during which demonstrators voiced criticism of the government. The statement reflects Modi’s response to the incident and his call for reconciliation rather than punitive action.
