GLASGOW: Pakistani boxer Fatima Zahra has made history by winning a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games, becoming the first Pakistani woman to earn a boxing medal in the history of the event.
Competing in the women’s 60kg category, Fatima Zahra reached the semifinals, where she faced a boxer from Canada.
The Canadian athlete held a 4-1 advantage after the opening round. During the second round, the referee stopped the contest, resulting in Fatima Zahra’s defeat and ending her bid for the gold medal.
Despite the semifinal loss, Fatima secured the bronze medal, as losing semifinalists in Commonwealth Games boxing are awarded bronze.
Her achievement marks a significant milestone for Pakistan, as it is the country’s first boxing medal at the Commonwealth Games since 2014.
The medal also represents a historic breakthrough for women’s boxing in Pakistan, with Fatima Zahra becoming the first Pakistani female boxer to stand on the Commonwealth Games podium.
Earlier in the tournament, Fatima advanced to the semifinals by defeating Jordan Wilson of New Zealand in the quarterfinals of the 60kg division.
