ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has welcomed the draft peace agreement presented by the Gaza Board of Peace, expressing hope that the initiative will help pave the way for the Palestinian people to achieve their right to self-determination.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, the prime minister praised the countries that played a mediating role in the process, specifically mentioning the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye.
He said their diplomatic efforts deserved special appreciation for helping bring the negotiations to this stage.
The statement described the development as an important achievement for the Board of Peace under the leadership of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan hopes that concrete steps will now be taken to implement all commitments made under the proposed Gaza peace framework.
He emphasized that lasting peace must be linked to a credible political process that enables Palestinians to exercise their right to self-determination in accordance with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
The prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding position that the peace process should ultimately lead to the establishment of an independent, sovereign, and geographically contiguous Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif (Jerusalem) as its capital.
The statement came a day after President Trump announced that an agreement had been reached regarding the disarmament of Hamas in Gaza, adding that Israeli forces would withdraw once the disarmament process was completed.
According to Trump, the agreement represents an important step toward the formation of a new Palestinian administration in Gaza and would be implemented in a gradual and organized manner.
Following the announcement, Hamas confirmed that an agreement had been reached concerning weapons and the phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
In its statement, Hamas called on the mediators to ensure implementation of the agreement and expressed hope that the mediating countries and the Board of Peace would ensure that Israel adheres to its commitments.
Pakistan has consistently supported a negotiated settlement to the Palestinian issue and has repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian access, and a political solution based on international legitimacy and UN resolutions.
