KABUL: Anti-Taliban resistance activity has reportedly intensified in Afghanistan’s northeastern Badakhshan province, with armed resistance groups claiming responsibility for a series of new attacks against Taliban positions.
According to a report by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), the Taliban administration continues to face security challenges in northern Afghanistan, where Badakhshan is increasingly emerging as a key center of anti-Taliban resistance.
The report states that the recent increase in guerrilla-style attacks has raised questions about the Taliban’s ability to maintain full control and security in parts of the province.
Resistance groups reportedly have targeted Taliban checkpoints, military positions, and strategic intersections in the districts of Yaftal, Zebak, Argo, and Kishm.
According to the report, the resistance forces claimed that on July 29 they launched an operation in Yaftal, during which they temporarily seized a Taliban district headquarters, a police headquarters, and an intelligence office. The groups also claimed they captured weapons and vehicles during the operation.
The Taliban authorities have not immediately commented on the latest claims, and the reported incidents have not been independently verified.
Badakhshan has witnessed sporadic clashes between Taliban forces and anti-Taliban resistance groups since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021. The province’s mountainous terrain has made it a focal point for insurgent activity and armed resistance.
Security analysts say continued attacks in northern Afghanistan highlight the ongoing security challenges facing the Taliban administration, although independent verification of battlefield claims by either side often remains difficult due to limited access to conflict areas.
