SUKKUR: Water levels in the Indus River have continued to rise, with a moderate flood persisting at Guddu Barrage and a low-level flood continuing at Sukkur Barrage, according to the Irrigation Department.
The rising river levels have inundated several low-lying katcha (riverine) areas connected to both barrages, prompting concern among local residents and authorities.
According to irrigation officials, river inflows increased significantly over the past 24 hours. At Guddu Barrage, inflow rose by approximately 40,000 cusecs, while Sukkur Barrage recorded an increase of around 35,000 cusecs.
The latest hydrological data showed that Guddu Barrage received an inflow of 426,504 cusecs, with an outflow of 386,860 cusecs, keeping the barrage at a moderate flood level.
At Sukkur Barrage, the inflow was recorded at 314,833 cusecs, while the outflow stood at 257,903 cusecs, where a low-level flood remains in effect.
Meanwhile, Kotri Barrage recorded an inflow of 59,939 cusecs and an outflow of 16,059 cusecs.
Irrigation authorities said they are continuously monitoring the hydrological situation across the Indus River system. Based on preliminary assessments, officials expect a slight decline in water levels at Guddu Barrage over the next 24 hours, although moderate flooding is likely to continue.
Similarly, authorities anticipate that water levels at Sukkur Barrage will gradually begin to recede over the next 48 to 72 hours, provided upstream conditions remain stable.
The department said floodwaters have already entered several riverine areas downstream of Guddu and Sukkur barrages, affecting agricultural land, grazing fields, and other low-lying areas.
Relevant government departments have been directed to remain on high alert and maintain close surveillance of the evolving flood situation to respond promptly to any emergency.
Residents living in vulnerable katcha areas have also been advised to take precautionary measures and remain vigilant as authorities continue to monitor river flows and issue updates on changing conditions.
