KARACHI: The Sindh government has entrusted the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) with the execution of four major infrastructure projects in Karachi worth approximately Rs8.5 billion, with work on three of the schemes scheduled to begin in August.
According to official details, the projects are aimed at improving traffic flow and easing congestion on some of Karachi’s busiest road corridors.
One of the key projects involves the construction of a flyover (interchange) near the Northern Bypass on the M-9 Super Highway. Since the structure will cross the motorway, the Sindh Local Government Department has initiated the process of obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the National Highway Authority (NHA).
The proposed flyover will connect Jinnah Avenue (Malir Cantt Road) with routes leading toward Hyderabad, while also providing direct access between Sohrab Goth Sabzi Mandi and Jinnah Avenue. Officials say the project will eliminate the need for motorists to take lengthy U-turns, improving traffic movement on both sides of the motorway.
The estimated cost of this project is Rs2.30 billion, which also includes the rehabilitation and beautification of Jinnah Avenue.
Another major scheme includes the construction of a flyover at the intersection linking Abul Hasan Isphahani Road with the motorway near Al-Asif Square. The project carries an estimated cost of Rs2.10 billion, with construction expected to commence during August.
Officials said the flyover is designed to facilitate smoother traffic movement for vehicles approaching the intersection from all directions, reducing travel delays and congestion.
The infrastructure package also includes the reconstruction and upgrading of Hawksbay Road, covering the 8.5-kilometre stretch from Y-Junction to Machhli Chowk, as well as the road extending from Machhli Chowk to Kaka Pir.
The combined estimated cost of these road development projects is Rs4.162 billion, and construction is also scheduled to begin in August.
In addition, the Sindh government plans to start work on the Malir Halt Underpass, another project intended to improve connectivity and reduce traffic bottlenecks in the city.
Officials believe the four mega projects will significantly enhance Karachi’s transport infrastructure by easing traffic congestion, improving road connectivity, and reducing travel time for commuters across several key routes. Construction on most of the projects is expected to begin in the coming weeks after the completion of required administrative and regulatory formalities.
