Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a stern warning to European governments, declaring that while Moscow does not seek confrontation, it is fully prepared to respond if Europe chooses the path of war. His remarks came shortly before a high-level U.S. delegation arrived in Moscow for sensitive discussions on the Ukraine conflict and a proposed American peace plan.
Speaking to reporters in Moscow, Putin emphasized that Russia has no intention of initiating military conflict with Europe. However, he stressed that Russia would not hesitate to defend itself if provoked. “We do not want war with Europe,” Putin said. “But if Europe wants war with Russia, then we are ready.”
Claims That Europe Is Undermining Peace Efforts
Putin accused European governments of deliberately undermining ongoing efforts to restore peace in Ukraine. According to him, European countries are attempting to sabotage the Ukraine peace negotiations and are reluctant to see progress on the U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal.
The Russian president claimed that several European leaders previously distanced themselves from negotiations and are now attempting to derail a potential breakthrough. He alleged that Europe fears the success of the American peace plan because it would reduce Europe’s influence over the conflict’s direction.
High-Level U.S. Delegation Meets Putin for Five Hours
The comments came ahead of a major diplomatic engagement in Moscow, where U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, senior adviser and son-in-law of former President Donald Trump, held extensive talks with Putin. The meeting reportedly lasted nearly five hours, focusing on possibilities for a ceasefire in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and the framework of a proposed American-led peace agreement.
According to Russian officials, the discussions included an in-depth review of military arrangements for a temporary halt to fighting, outlines of a political roadmap for negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, and provisions for international monitoring mechanisms.
Mixed Outcomes Reported From U.S.–Russia Dialogue
Yuri Ushakov, the Russian president’s foreign policy adviser, briefed local media after the meeting. He described the talks as “useful and constructive,” noting that both sides found common ground on several key points. However, he admitted that disagreements remain on multiple sensitive issues, including territorial boundaries, future security guarantees, and the role of international observers.
Ushakov emphasized that although certain elements were accepted by both sides, some provisions of the American peace initiative were still “under review” by Russian officials.
Despite these unresolved matters, both the U.S. and Russian sides agreed to continue dialogue in the coming weeks, raising cautious hopes that a long-awaited breakthrough could eventually emerge.
Ukraine Expresses Reservations Over Draft Peace Plan
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed concern over several elements of the draft peace plan presented to Kyiv. Zelensky stated that although Ukraine supports any genuine effort to end the war, there are “multiple sections” in the proposal that require further revision.
Ukrainian officials have long insisted that any agreement must include a full withdrawal of Russian troops, restored territorial control, and legally binding international guarantees.
