Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, accompanied by Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, held a significant meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the Prime Minister’s ongoing visit to Azerbaijan. The meeting, which also included the President of Azerbaijan, highlighted the strategic depth and mutual trust that underpin the political, defence, and economic relations between Pakistan and Turkey.

During the talks, the leadership of both countries discussed the full spectrum of bilateral ties, including cooperation in trade, defence, technology, energy, and regional diplomacy. Pakistan and Turkey have long enjoyed warm relations rooted in shared history, religious affinity, cultural ties, and a common vision for cooperation among Muslim-majority nations.

The presence of Field Marshal Asim Munir in the meeting emphasizes the importance of defence and military collaboration between the two countries. Pakistan and Turkey have expanded defence cooperation in recent years, particularly in the areas of joint training, counterterrorism, drone technology, and the exchange of strategic military expertise. The meeting served as another step toward strengthening this cooperation at a higher strategic level.

The leaders also exchanged views on current developments in the Muslim world. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza and ongoing tensions in the Middle East were discussed in detail. Both Pakistan and Turkey reiterated their commitment to peaceful resolution of conflicts, support for oppressed Muslim communities, and joint diplomatic efforts to promote global awareness on issues affecting the Muslim Ummah.

During discussions, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif underscored that Pakistan and Turkey are bound not merely by diplomatic ties but by decades of friendship, solidarity, and mutual respect. He emphasized that the friendship between the two countries has withstood global political shifts and continues to evolve in a rapidly changing international environment. The Prime Minister noted that high-level engagements are essential for maintaining momentum in bilateral projects.

President Erdogan expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s consistent support for Turkey in regional and international platforms. He reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with Pakistan in various fields, including defense collaboration and energy security. President Erdogan also conveyed his desire to increase Turkish investment in infrastructure and industrial development projects in Pakistan.

One of the key outcomes of the meeting was agreement on the forthcoming visit of a high-level Turkish ministerial delegation to Pakistan. This delegation is expected to finalize several cooperation frameworks, including enhanced bilateral trade agreements, defense procurement plans, energy sector partnerships, and academic and cultural exchange programs.

The discussions additionally explored ways to increase trade volume between the two countries, which both sides believe remains below potential. Pakistan and Turkey aim to expand trade in textiles, agricultural products, machinery, and construction sectors. Turkish companies, known globally for their expertise in construction and public works, have shown increasing interest in infrastructure development projects within Pakistan, including transport networks and smart city technology.

The Pakistan leadership also highlighted the importance of developing stronger air connectivity and tourism exchange programs. Turkey continues to remain a popular travel destination for Pakistani tourists, and both governments are exploring ways to enhance flight frequencies and make travel more affordable.

Field Marshal Asim Munir’s participation in the conversation reflected Pakistan’s belief that regional security cooperation is integral to deeper diplomatic and economic ties. Both military leaderships have previously recognized the need for coordinated approaches to counter global extremist networks and promote stability in regions of mutual interest.

The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their mutual desire to continue working together for peace, stability, and long-term prosperity in the region and the broader Muslim world. The leaders stressed that the challenges currently facing Muslim nations require unity, cooperation, and strong diplomatic coordination rather than division.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif remarked that Pakistan-Turkey friendship symbolizes stability, reliability, and shared purpose. He said that the two nations stand together not only during times of celebration but also during crises, natural disasters, and political challenges. He added that the partnership will continue to deepen in years to come.
