Israeli Army Chief Orders Immediate Destruction of All Tunnel Networks in Gaza as Violations of Ceasefire Intensify

The Israeli military has intensified its operations in the Gaza Strip, with the Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, issuing a direct and urgent order to destroy all tunnel networks present in the region. The announcement comes amid renewed clashes and accusations of repeated violations of the ceasefire agreement. The tunnel systems in Gaza, often described by Israel as part of the Palestinian resistance’s military infrastructure, have been at the center of Israeli strategic objectives for years.

In his statement, Lieutenant General Zamir instructed Israeli ground and air units to carry out operations targeting tunnels “as swiftly as possible.” He claimed that these underground passages are being used for what he termed “covert activities” against Israeli forces. According to Israeli intelligence assessments, Gaza’s tunnels extend beneath residential areas, connecting neighborhoods and providing supply and movement routes for resistance groups. Israel has long argued that these tunnel systems enable fighters to move undetected and plan operations, while Palestinian groups maintain that the tunnels are essential for defense and survival under a blockade.

This command signals a new phase in Israel’s military operations, focusing heavily on the destruction of infrastructure rather than solely targeting personnel. Analysts suggest that such a strategy may lead to escalated airstrikes and heavy ground operations, given that many tunnels are located in densely populated civilian zones. This raises concerns about further casualties and destruction in areas already facing severe humanitarian crises.

Meanwhile, reports from Gaza indicate that the ceasefire arrangement remains fragile. Despite international mediation efforts aimed at reducing hostilities, violations have continued. In the Shuja’iyya neighborhood of Gaza City, Israeli forces conducted a drone strike that resulted in the serious injury of a young child. Local health workers reported that the attack occurred despite a temporary halt in hostilities agreed upon during ongoing negotiations.

The situation remains equally tense in the occupied West Bank, where Israeli raids and military operations have continued. At least two Palestinians were killed after Israeli forces opened fire during an operation in a residential area. Witnesses reported that Israeli troops surrounded a neighborhood before engaging in armed confrontations and firing live ammunition. Local residents described the incident as part of a pattern of intensified aggression, claiming that such operations have become more frequent and deadly.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has expressed growing alarm over the deteriorating situation in the West Bank. In its latest briefing, OCHA reported that more than 260 Israeli attacks on Palestinian communities were recorded during the month of October alone. The organization stated that the scale and frequency of the operations indicate a disturbing escalation, adding that they pose serious humanitarian, human rights, and security concerns.

Humanitarian groups argue that the situation in both Gaza and the West Bank is deteriorating rapidly. Gaza remains under severe strain due to long-term blockade policies, infrastructure damage, and limited access to essential supplies such as fuel, electricity, medical equipment, and food. International aid agencies continue to call for sustained humanitarian corridors to allow the delivery of relief.

Israel’s order to destroy tunnels in Gaza is likely to draw international scrutiny, particularly due to the potential impact on civilian populations. Many of Gaza’s residential buildings, schools, and hospitals are located near areas suspected of containing tunnel networks. Airstrikes aimed at destroying underground routes have previously resulted in large-scale destruction of civilian property and loss of life.
