VEHARI: Two employees of the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) lost their lives during a sewer cleaning operation in Punjab’s Vehari district on Saturday, rescue officials said.
The incident occurred near the Old Lorry Stand, where the workers were assigned to clean a main sewer line.
According to rescue authorities, both workers entered the sewer without proper safety equipment and were reportedly secured only with a rope. During the operation, the rope allegedly came loose, causing both men to fall into the sewer, where they died.
Rescue teams responded to the scene and recovered the bodies from the sewer. The deceased were identified as residents of Khanewal district.
The bodies were shifted to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Vehari for legal formalities and further proceedings.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are being examined. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding whether standard safety protocols were followed during the operation.
The deaths have once again highlighted concerns over occupational safety for sanitation workers, particularly during hazardous sewer maintenance work. Such operations generally require specialised protective equipment and safety measures to reduce the risk of fatal accidents.
