ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Atta Tarar has announced the arrest of a suspect allegedly involved in spreading misleading propaganda against Pakistan and its security institutions through coordinated digital campaigns, claiming that the network behind the operation has links to India.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad on Saturday, Tarar said the suspect, who worked in digital marketing services, was taken into custody by security agencies after investigators uncovered evidence suggesting his online activities were connected to individuals and organisations based in India.
According to the minister, the accused was allegedly engaged in running social media campaigns designed to spread misinformation and anti-state narratives. He claimed that investigations revealed the suspect had been receiving payments from India to promote and amplify content critical of Pakistan.
“The individual was providing digital marketing services, and the investigation established that the network behind these activities had links to India,” Tarar said. “The payments for making anti-Pakistan content go viral were also coming from India.”
The minister said authorities had obtained access to the suspect’s digital records during the investigation, which helped expose what he described as a broader misinformation network operating across social media platforms.
Tarar alleged that much of the material circulated through the network was related to the Joint Action Committee in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). According to him, the content was intended to provoke unrest, spread confusion, and encourage anti-state sentiment.
He further claimed that investigators had identified numerous Indian social media accounts allegedly involved in promoting similar narratives.
“Every post was aimed at inciting people against the state,” he said. “There was an organised attempt to create unrest in Kashmir through coordinated misinformation.”
The information minister alleged that false and misleading content concerning Pakistan and its institutions was deliberately disseminated to influence public opinion and destabilise the situation in Azad Kashmir.
Tarar also accused the banned Joint Action Committee of working against Pakistan’s interests, claiming the organisation had no genuine commitment to the Kashmir cause or the welfare of the people of the region.
“We have consistently maintained that the Joint Action Committee is damaging the Kashmir cause,” he said. “If they are truly sincere about serving the people, why do they refuse to participate in elections?”
He alleged that the group had attempted to launch a movement through violence and intimidation, accusing it of using weapons and force during protests. Tarar further claimed that members of the organisation were responsible for violent demonstrations in which police personnel in Azad Kashmir lost their lives.
“They promoted a politics of violence, disrupted law and order, and their links ultimately lead back to India,” he said.
The minister maintained that the government possessed “irrefutable evidence” of Indian funding for what he described as disruptive elements operating in Azad Kashmir.
Tarar also accused the alleged network of using artificial intelligence (AI) tools to manipulate public opinion by circulating old videos and falsely portraying them as recent incidents from Kashmir.
He said such tactics were intended to mislead the public, inflame tensions, and create a false impression regarding the situation in the region.
“The misuse of artificial intelligence allowed old footage to be presented as if it were current events from Kashmir,” he stated.
The minister reiterated that the federal government would continue taking action against individuals or groups involved in spreading disinformation, whether operating domestically or with alleged foreign support.
Tarar praised Pakistan’s leadership for what he described as strengthening the country’s international standing. He said the efforts of the prime minister and the country’s military leadership had enhanced Pakistan’s reputation globally.
“The prime minister and the field marshal have worked tirelessly to improve Pakistan’s image across the world,” he said. “Pakistan will continue on its path of development and progress.”
The press conference comes amid increasing official concern over the spread of misinformation on social media platforms and allegations of foreign-sponsored digital influence campaigns targeting Pakistan.
Authorities have not yet released additional details regarding the identity of the arrested suspect or any formal charges filed against him. Officials also did not disclose whether any international legal cooperation or further arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
