In a worrying development for Indian cricket, vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Sydney hospital after his injury, sustained during the third One-Day International (ODI) against Australia, worsened significantly.
According to reports from Indian media, Iyer was injured while attempting a catch during the fielding session of the final ODI match in Sydney. In the process, he landed awkwardly, causing a severe impact to his ribs, which initially appeared to be a minor bruise but has since developed into a serious internal injury.
Doctors treating the cricketer have confirmed that Iyer suffered internal bleeding as a result of the blow. The situation prompted immediate medical attention, and he was shifted to the ICU for intensive monitoring. Medical sources have revealed that Iyer will remain under close observation for at least 2 to 7 days, depending on his recovery rate and the stabilization of his condition.
Hospital authorities in Sydney have not issued an official medical bulletin yet, but Indian team sources have expressed concern over the extent of his internal injuries. “He’s being monitored around the clock. The bleeding has been controlled, but doctors are keeping him in the ICU as a precautionary measure,” one insider reportedly said.
Indian media reports also state that doctors have placed a temporary travel restriction on the cricketer. He will only be cleared to fly back to India once his condition stabilizes and he is deemed fit for air travel. The medical team is also working to prevent potential infection caused by internal trauma, a common complication in such injuries.
