Karachi: The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of K-Electric, Monis Alvi, has hinted that recent alterations in the multi-year tariff structure approved by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) could potentially affect Karachi’s electricity consumers.
In an official statement, Monis Alvi explained that NEPRA has made significant reductions and structural changes to K-Electric’s multi-year tariff framework. These adjustments, he warned, are likely to have a direct financial impact on consumers in the city.
“The extensive revisions made by NEPRA in the approved tariff plan,” he said, “could influence the way electricity prices are passed on to end-users, possibly leading to cost pressures on consumers.”
The K-Electric chief added that the company is currently reviewing the details of NEPRA’s determination to assess the long-term effects on operational sustainability and investment plans.
Industry experts note that the multi-year tariff (MYT) determines the allowed revenue for power utilities like K-Electric over several years, based on projected costs, losses, and efficiency targets. Any major revision by NEPRA can thus affect not only consumer pricing but also the utility’s ability to invest in infrastructure and maintenance.
While K-Electric has not yet specified the extent of the impact, Monis Alvi’s statement suggests that electricity bills in Karachi could fluctuate depending on how the new tariff structure is implemented.
