LAHORE: Torrential monsoon rains battered Lahore, with 263 millimetres of rainfall recorded in a single spell, causing widespread urban flooding, severe traffic disruption, and rain-related accidents across the city.
According to the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), the Lahore Airport area received the highest rainfall at 263 mm.
Other rainfall measurements included:
- Tajpura: 157.4 mm
- Kahna: 143 mm
- Shadipura: 136 mm
- Mughalpura: 133 mm
- Mall Road: 116 mm
- Manawan: 112.2 mm
- Johar Town: 81 mm
- Chowk Nakhuda: 64.6 mm
The heavy downpour submerged roads across the city, leaving several feet of water in many areas and bringing traffic to a near standstill.
Numerous cars and motorcycles broke down after becoming stranded in floodwater, while dramatic scenes emerged from DHA, where boats were seen navigating flooded streets.
Authorities said water levels in parts of DHA rose so high that they reached the roof of an underpass. The Harbanspura Underpass was also closed to traffic after being inundated.
In Tajpura, floodwater entered residential homes, creating significant hardship for residents.
Several neighborhoods, including Canal Road near Journalists’ Colony, Jallo Park, Medical Scheme, Tajpura Scheme, and adjoining localities, experienced extensive waterlogging, with floodwater accumulating several feet deep.
The severe weather also resulted in casualties and injuries.
Near Kahna on Ferozepur Road, two brothers were killed after their motorcycle reportedly skidded on the slippery road and crashed into an electricity pole. Both sustained fatal head injuries.
In a separate incident in DHA Phase IV, the roof of a house constructed with T.R. girders collapsed, leaving four people injured.
Rescue teams and municipal authorities continued drainage operations in several affected areas as officials worked to restore normal traffic flow and assist residents impacted by the heavy rainfall.
