WASHINGTON: U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, have welcomed the birth of their fourth child, a baby boy, on Sunday, according to a statement issued by the couple.
The couple announced that their newborn son has been named Alec Neil Vance.
Historic Milestone
According to The Wall Street Journal, the birth marks the first time in more than 150 years that the spouse of a sitting U.S. vice president has given birth while her husband is serving in office.
The previous recorded instance occurred in 1870, when the wife of then–Vice President Schuyler Colfax gave birth during her husband’s tenure.
Family Grows to Six
J.D. and Usha Vance are already parents to three children:
- Ewan
- Vivek
- Mirabel
With the arrival of Alec Neil Vance, the family now has four children.
Vice President to Remain on Duty
In their statement, the vice president said he does not intend to take formal parental leave.
However, he plans to adjust his official schedule to spend as much time as possible with his newborn son while continuing to fulfill his responsibilities as vice president.
The announcement has drawn congratulatory messages from political colleagues and supporters, marking a personal milestone for the Vance family during J.D. Vance’s tenure in office.
