GUIYANG: In one of China’s most unusual examples of urban planning, a major elevated roadway passes directly above residential apartment buildings, creating a landmark that continues to attract attention from visitors and engineers alike.
The structure, known as the Shuikuoshi Bridge (Shuikuoshi Overpass), is located in Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou Province, and has become famous for its unconventional design.
An Unusual Engineering Solution
Completed in 1997, the overpass was built as part of the city’s transportation network.
What makes it remarkable is that more than a dozen apartment buildings were later constructed beneath the elevated roadway, allowing the otherwise unused land under the bridge to be converted into affordable housing.
The project is often cited as an example of maximizing limited urban space in a densely populated city.
Affordable Housing Beneath the Bridge
According to reports, city authorities decided to utilize the vacant land beneath the bridge because of a shortage of affordable housing.
Two years after the bridge was completed, 10 residential apartment buildings were constructed as part of a low-cost housing project. Over time, additional buildings were added, and today more than a dozen apartment blocks stand beneath the overpass.
Living With Traffic Overhead
Residents living beneath the bridge experience the sound and vibrations of traffic passing overhead.
However, reports suggest that relatively few residents complain about the noise, with many saying the opportunity to own or rent affordable housing in the city center outweighs the inconvenience.
Some residents even describe the constant movement and vibrations as part of the area’s unique character.
Measures to Reduce Noise
To improve living conditions, local authorities gradually restricted heavy trucks from using the overpass.
The move helped reduce both traffic noise and structural vibrations experienced by residents, making the apartments more comfortable while preserving the bridge’s role in the city’s transportation system.
