DOHA: The Palestinian group Hamas has announced the appointment of Dr. Khalil Al-Hayya as the new head of its political bureau, succeeding Yahya Sinwar, according to statements reported by Arab media.
The announcement marks a significant leadership change within the organization as it continues to operate amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
New Political Bureau Chief
In a statement, Hamas said that Dr. Khalil Al-Hayya had been elected as the movement’s new political bureau chief.
According to the group, he will assume the leadership role previously held by Yahya Sinwar.
Long-Time Hamas Figure
Born in Gaza in 1960, Khalil Al-Hayya has been associated with Hamas since the organization’s establishment in 1987.
Over the years, he has held several senior political positions within the movement and has been regarded as one of its prominent leaders.
Increased Prominence
According to the report, Al-Hayya became more influential within Hamas following the deaths of several senior leaders, including Ismail Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar, and military commander Mohammed Deif.
His appointment is expected to shape the group’s political leadership during the continuing conflict and regional diplomatic efforts.
Succession Following Yahya Sinwar
Hamas stated that Al-Hayya succeeds Yahya Sinwar, who the group says was killed in October 2024 during fighting with Israeli forces.
Israel has previously stated that Sinwar was killed during military operations in Gaza.
The appointment comes as the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues, with international efforts ongoing to secure ceasefires, humanitarian access, and broader diplomatic solutions.
