ISLAMABAD: The growing impacts of climate change are becoming one of the most serious challenges to Pakistan’s food security, with rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, floods, droughts, and increasing water scarcity posing significant risks to agricultural production across the country.
Experts warn that the changing climate is threatening the cultivation of major crops, particularly wheat and rice, which are vital to Pakistan’s food supply and economy. Continued environmental changes could reduce crop yields, increase production costs, and place additional pressure on farmers already struggling with unpredictable weather conditions.
According to climate assessments, temperatures in Pakistan are rising faster than the global average, making the country’s agriculture sector increasingly vulnerable. Higher temperatures are altering growing seasons, reducing soil moisture, and increasing the frequency of heat stress on crops, livestock, and agricultural workers.
Agriculture remains a cornerstone of Pakistan’s economy, contributing significantly to the country’s gross domestic product while providing employment and livelihoods for millions of people, especially in rural communities. Any decline in agricultural productivity therefore has far-reaching consequences, not only for farmers but also for national food availability, rural incomes, and economic stability.
Climate experts say that the combination of extreme weather events and long-term climatic shifts is disrupting traditional farming practices. Unseasonal rainfall, prolonged dry spells, and sudden floods are making it difficult for farmers to plan sowing and harvesting cycles, resulting in lower productivity and increased financial losses.
Speaking on the issue, Muhammad Saleem Sheikh, spokesperson for the Ministry of Climate Change, emphasized that climate change is no longer solely an environmental concern but has evolved into a matter of national food security.
He said that rising temperatures, frequent heatwaves, devastating floods, and prolonged droughts are increasingly disrupting crop production cycles across Pakistan. These changing weather patterns are reducing agricultural resilience and making food production more uncertain with each passing year.
The spokesperson noted that wheat and rice, two of Pakistan’s most important staple crops, are particularly vulnerable to extreme climatic conditions. Excessive heat during critical growth stages can significantly reduce grain formation, while heavy rainfall and flooding can destroy standing crops and damage agricultural land.
Water scarcity has also emerged as a major concern. Pakistan already ranks among the world’s water-stressed countries, and declining freshwater availability is expected to worsen due to changing rainfall patterns, shrinking glaciers, and increasing demand for irrigation. Farmers in many regions are facing growing difficulties in securing sufficient water for their crops, further threatening agricultural output.
Climate-related disasters have repeatedly demonstrated their destructive impact on Pakistan’s farming sector. Large-scale floods in recent years have submerged thousands of acres of farmland, destroyed crops, displaced farming communities, and damaged irrigation infrastructure. Similarly, recurring droughts have reduced water supplies and lowered agricultural productivity in arid and semi-arid regions.
Experts believe that climate change also increases the spread of crop diseases and pests, creating additional challenges for farmers. Warmer temperatures and changing humidity levels provide favorable conditions for pests and plant diseases, leading to greater crop losses unless effective management strategies are adopted.
In response to these growing threats, government institutions and agricultural experts are emphasizing the need for climate-smart farming practices. These include the adoption of drought-resistant crop varieties, efficient irrigation systems, improved water management, modern weather forecasting, and sustainable agricultural techniques designed to help farmers adapt to changing climatic conditions.
The Ministry of Climate Change has also stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation between federal and provincial governments, research institutions, and international partners to improve resilience against climate-related risks. Investment in agricultural research, early warning systems, and farmer education is considered essential to safeguarding future food production.
Experts further recommend expanding afforestation programs, conserving natural water resources, improving soil management, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate the long-term effects of climate change.
They warn that failure to address climate challenges could have serious consequences for Pakistan’s economy, food prices, and nutritional security. Lower agricultural production may increase dependence on food imports, raise inflation, and disproportionately affect low-income households that spend a significant portion of their income on food.
As climate change continues to intensify, policymakers, scientists, and farmers agree that urgent adaptation measures are necessary to protect Pakistan’s agriculture sector. Strengthening climate resilience will not only secure food supplies but also support rural livelihoods and ensure sustainable economic development in the years ahead.
