Sukkur – Under the guidance of SEPCO Commander Nisar Ahmed Sheikh, the Hydro-Electric Workers Union organized a peaceful and well-coordinated protest in Sukkur against WAPDA’s proposed privatization, rising inflation, and long-standing issues faced by employees. The demonstration took place in front of Dolphin Bakers and witnessed participation from a large number of employees from various SEPCO departments.
The protest was led by union leaders including Khalil Ahmed Domki, Shujaat Hussain Ghamro, Syed Majid Hussain Shah, Abdul Khaliq Sawand, Aqeel Ahmed Dayo, Ashfaq Ahmed Mehr, Hidayatullah, Abdul Malik Soomro, Nazar Memon, Javed Abbasi, and Abid Hussain Kopang. Employees from the Sukkur and Ghotki zones, along with representatives from GSC, GSO, M&T, Computer, FD, S&I, Field Store, Training Center, RO Office, Circle, and all divisions and sub-divisions actively participated.
In their passionate addresses, the union leaders emphasized that WAPDA’s privatization is unacceptable as the institution is a pillar of public service and the national economy. They warned that privatization would put the future of thousands of employees and their families at risk.
The leaders demanded that contract and daily-wage employees be made permanent, salaries and allowances be adjusted according to inflation, promotions and time-scale issues be resolved immediately, and retired employees receive their pending dues without delay. They also called for the provision of full safety equipment for field workers and improved medical facilities for employees and their families.
Union leaders stressed that if the government and management fail to implement these demands promptly, the scope of protests will be widened, and a potential shutdown could be considered.
Concluding the protest, speakers highlighted that SEPCO workers form the backbone of the institution, and they vowed to continue their peaceful yet determined struggle to protect their rights.
