ISLAMABAD: A foreign airline flight traveling from Istanbul to Islamabad made an emergency landing in Baku, Azerbaijan, after experiencing a technical issue while flying through Azerbaijani airspace.
According to aviation sources, the aircraft developed a fault during the flight, prompting the crew to declare an emergency.
Data from Flightradar24 indicated that the aircraft experienced a disruption in receiving signals from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Following the navigation issue, the pilot of the Airbus A330 issued an emergency notification and requested assistance.
Acting on the guidance of air traffic control, the pilot safely diverted the aircraft to Baku International Airport, where it landed without incident.
The flight had originally been scheduled to arrive at Islamabad International Airport at 3:35 a.m., but the emergency diversion resulted in a significant delay. After landing in Baku, passengers were safely disembarked and transferred to the airport terminal while maintenance teams began inspecting and repairing the aircraft.
Following the completion of the necessary arrangements, the passengers were flown to Islamabad approximately eight and a half hours later.
The disruption also affected the airline’s return service, with the Istanbul-bound flight departing nearly nine hours behind schedule due to the unscheduled stop and technical inspection.
No injuries were reported, and aviation authorities have not announced any further operational concerns related to the incident. The emergency landing was carried out safely, and the aircraft’s technical issue is expected to be reviewed as part of standard aviation procedures.
