Islamabad: The federal government has decided to introduce fresh amendments to the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Local Government Act.
Under the proposed amendment, in the absence of a local government, the federal government will be empowered to appoint an administrator. The appointed administrator or local government will be bound to act upon the directions of the federal government.
The amendment also grants the administrator the authority to impose taxes. However, any tax proposal by the local government will require parliamentary approval.
Parliament will retain the authority to reject a proposed tax within 60 days. If no decision is taken during this period, the tax will automatically be deemed approved.
The proposed amendment will soon be tabled in the National Assembly for debate and approval.
