WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump praised Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi during a meeting at the White House, describing him as “a good leader” and expressing confidence in his leadership.

The two leaders met in Washington to discuss bilateral relations, regional security, and economic cooperation.

Speaking alongside the Iraqi prime minister, Trump commended Al-Zaidi’s performance, saying he had accomplished significant work in a short period.

“He is a good leader,” Trump said. “The Iraqi prime minister has done an excellent job in a very short time, and I believe he will remain in office for a long time.”

The U.S. president also expressed his intention to strengthen ties with Iraq, saying Washington was looking forward to expanding its partnership with Baghdad.

Trump added that major American oil companies would soon begin operating in Iraq and reaffirmed U.S. support for the country’s security.

“If Iraq needs protection, we will be there,” he said.

During the meeting, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi emphasized his government’s commitment to strengthening state authority and ensuring that only official security institutions possess weapons.

He said the Iraqi government would establish the state’s exclusive authority over the use of force and would not permit any organization or political group to maintain armed wings.

“No institution or group other than the Iraqi armed forces will be allowed to carry weapons on Iraqi soil,” Al-Zaidi said.

The Iraqi prime minister also stressed that his administration is focused on the country’s future rather than past conflicts.

“We want to talk about the future, not the past,” he said.

The White House meeting underscored efforts by both countries to deepen cooperation in security, energy, and economic development, while highlighting Iraq’s stated commitment to reinforcing state institutions and strengthening its partnership with the United States.
