WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a fresh warning to Iran, saying the United States could target the country’s power plants and bridges if Tehran does not agree to a negotiated deal.
In a recent interview, Trump said U.S. military operations against Iran would continue until he decides otherwise.
“The attacks on Iran will continue until I say, ‘that’s enough,’” Trump said.
He also claimed that U.S. officials held talks with Iran on Tuesday and urged Tehran to reach an agreement, adding that Iranian energy infrastructure could become a focus in the final phase of any military campaign.
Trump warned that if no agreement is reached and Iran is unwilling to negotiate, the United States could launch strikes on the country’s energy and transportation infrastructure.
“If there is no deal and they are not prepared to negotiate, next week we will target Iran’s power plants and bridges,” he said.
The U.S. president further claimed that Washington could destroy “all of Iran’s power plants and all of its bridges,” adding that Iran was being hit hard and had only limited military capability remaining.
During the interview, Trump also reversed his earlier position on imposing a 20 percent toll on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
Less than 24 hours after suggesting such a measure, he said he disliked the idea of charging tolls for passage through the strategic waterway.
“I do not want anyone to charge a toll in the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump said.
He further claimed that Gulf states would prefer to invest in the United States rather than pay transit fees associated with the strait.
Trump’s remarks come amid continued tensions between Washington and Tehran. His statements regarding potential strikes and negotiations have not been independently verified, and there has been no immediate official response from Iranian authorities to the latest comments.
