Karachi: Early morning drizzle in parts of Karachi brought relief to residents as areas including II Chundrigar Road, Saddar, and Garden experienced light rainfall, making the weather pleasant.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast intermittent rains from today until September 19 across the country’s northern and upper regions.
Forecast for Upper Pakistan
According to PMD, heavy showers are likely at isolated places in:
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)
- Azad Kashmir
- Gilgit-Baltistan
- Islamabad
- Certain parts of Punjab
The Met Office warned that intense spells in these areas may trigger urban flooding and landslides, particularly in hilly terrain.
Conditions in Sindh and Balochistan
For most parts of Sindh, dry weather is expected to prevail. However, coastal districts, including Karachi, may witness partly cloudy skies with chances of light drizzle or brief showers.
In Balochistan, weather will remain partly cloudy in most regions, with no major rainfall activity predicted.
Glacial Lake Outburst Warning in KP
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has issued an alert warning of possible glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) due to rising temperatures and heavy rain forecasts in northern districts. Local authorities have been directed to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to protect communities living in vulnerable areas.
Broader Implications
The upcoming spell of rains is expected to provide relief from ongoing dry weather in several northern areas but could also exacerbate risks of flash floods and landslides. Urban centers in KP, northern Punjab, and Kashmir have been advised to prepare for waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
