Hyderabad, India: A road in the Indian city of Hyderabad has reportedly been renamed “Donald Trump Avenue,” an honor that U.S. President Donald Trump described as unprecedented for an American president.
In a statement shared on his social media platform, Truth Social, President Trump expressed gratitude for the gesture, saying it marked the first time an American president had received such recognition in India.
“I am grateful for this honor,” Trump said, adding that he viewed the naming of the road as a unique distinction for a U.S. president.
The road is located in Hyderabad, the capital of the southern Indian state of Telangana, where the Indian National Congress is currently in power. According to reports, the renamed road is situated near the U.S. Consulate and in an area that houses offices of several major American technology companies, including Microsoft, Google, and Amazon.
The decision has drawn attention because former U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush both visited Hyderabad during their time in office, whereas Donald Trump has not visited the city.
The move has also sparked political debate in India. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, criticized the Congress Party over the decision, describing it as an example of political inconsistency and hypocrisy.
The Congress Party has not publicly responded to the BJP’s criticism in the reports cited.
The development comes at a time when diplomatic dynamics involving the United States and South Asia have been closely watched. According to the report, U.S.-Pakistan relations have improved during President Trump’s second term, while U.S.-India relations have faced strains, including disagreements over trade after the Trump administration imposed additional tariffs on Indian goods.
Analysts note that symbolic gestures such as naming public roads after foreign leaders often attract significant political attention, particularly when they occur against the backdrop of evolving international relationships.
Neither the Indian central government nor local authorities in Hyderabad immediately issued further comments explaining the reasons behind the road’s renaming beyond the reported announcement. The decision has nevertheless generated discussion in both political and diplomatic circles due to its symbolic significance and timing.
