Washington: Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s handling of the conflict with Iran, arguing that the war brought confusion, instability, and significant costs to the American public without achieving its stated objectives.
Speaking on the floor of the U.S. Senate, Schumer said Americans had borne the financial and political consequences of what he described as a major foreign policy mistake.
“President Trump has given the American people nothing but confusion, chaos, and a heavy price to pay from the Iran war,” Schumer said during his address.
Criticism of the Conflict
The Democratic senator argued that the costs associated with the conflict continued to rise throughout its duration.
“With every second that the war continued, the burden on the American people increased,” he said. “Americans have paid the price for what I believe was a historic mistake.”
Schumer claimed that the conflict would be remembered as one of the most unsuccessful foreign policy campaigns in modern history.
According to him, the war may eventually be viewed as one of the worst foreign policy ventures undertaken not only by the United States but by any country.
“Expensive War With No Clear Purpose”
The Senate Democratic leader described the military campaign as costly and ineffective.
“This was a ridiculous and expensive war that had no clear purpose,” Schumer said, arguing that the administration failed to demonstrate how the conflict advanced U.S. national interests.
He maintained that the American public deserved a clearer explanation of the goals, costs, and outcomes associated with the military operation.
Questions About Achieved Objectives
Schumer further claimed that the administration had failed to accomplish most of the objectives it had set for itself before and during the conflict.
“Virtually none of the goals established by President Trump were achieved,” he asserted.
