ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has said that Pakistan played a key role in bringing the United States and Iran to the negotiating table, adding that efforts were made to ensure that dialogue between the two sides remained uninterrupted.

Speaking to Geo News, the defence minister said that Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement helped facilitate communication between the two countries at a critical time when tensions were high.

Pakistan’s Diplomatic Role

Khawaja Asif stated that Pakistan worked to ensure that both parties continued engaging in dialogue rather than escalating the conflict.

He claimed that Islamabad’s efforts were aimed at preventing the breakdown of talks and maintaining a diplomatic channel between Washington and Tehran.

According to him, sustained engagement was necessary to avoid further deterioration of regional stability.

Allegations Regarding External Interference

The defence minister also alleged that Israel had played a “negative and destructive role” in the broader regional situation, claiming that certain actors wanted tensions to continue.

He said that there were attempts to keep the conflict ongoing and to prolong instability in the region.

Khawaja Asif added that Israel’s approach, in his view, was aimed at keeping the United States engaged in regional conflicts.

Praise for US and Iran’s Approach

Commenting on the possible Iran–US agreement, Khawaja Asif expressed optimism that a deal could be finalized within the next one to two days.

He said that both sides had shown restraint and wisdom in pursuing diplomatic solutions rather than escalating tensions further.

The defence minister noted that the United States demonstrated “wisdom” in its diplomatic approach, adding that global leadership is defined by efforts to promote peace and stability.

Remarks on Iran

Referring to Iran, Khawaja Asif praised the country’s historical resilience and national spirit.

He said that Iran has a long and rich civilizational history and has shown determination in defending its sovereignty and national interests.

According to him, both Iran and the United States have demonstrated pragmatism by engaging in dialogue and moving toward a negotiated settlement.

Broader Regional Context

The comments come amid reports of intensified diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions between Iran and the United States.

Pakistani officials have recently expressed optimism about a potential agreement, suggesting that progress could lead to improved regional stability and reduced geopolitical friction.

Conclusion

Khawaja Asif reiterated that Pakistan’s role was focused on facilitating dialogue and preventing escalation, emphasizing that sustained communication is essential for peace.

He expressed hope that ongoing diplomatic efforts would soon result in a formal agreement between the two countries, contributing to stability in the wider region.
