The captain of India’s T20 World Cup 2025-winning team, Suryakumar Yadav, has reportedly been removed from captaincy duties.
According to Indian media reports, a final decision regarding Suryakumar’s future will be taken after consultation with head coach Gautam Gambhir, although it is expected that the process may take some time.
Reports suggest that selectors are currently considering a long-term strategy aimed at appointing a captain who can lead the team through the next two T20 World Cups.
Indian media further reports that batter Shreyas Iyer is being considered as the frontrunner to take over the captaincy. In addition, Tilak Varma is likely to be appointed vice-captain in place of Axar Patel.
It is worth noting that although India won the T20 World Cup under Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership, his individual batting form has remained under scrutiny. In IPL 2026, he managed only 270 runs in 13 matches for Mumbai Indians, with the team finishing ninth on the points table.
