KHANPUR: A tragic incident unfolded at Khanpur Dam when two young men lost their lives while attempting to rescue a friend who had drifted into deep water during a recreational outing.

According to rescue officials, the accident occurred when three friends entered the dam for swimming and bathing. During the activity, one of the young men moved into a deeper section of the water and began struggling.

Witnessing their friend in distress, the other two youths immediately jumped into the water in an effort to save him. However, the strong currents and considerable depth of the reservoir made the rescue attempt extremely difficult.

Rescue Attempt Turns Tragic

Rescue sources reported that all three friends were swept into danger as they struggled against the water. Despite their efforts to help one another, the conditions proved overwhelming.

Emergency response teams were dispatched to the scene and launched a rescue operation. After a search, rescuers recovered the bodies of two of the young men, who had drowned during the attempt to save their friend.

The third individual was successfully pulled from the water alive but was in critical condition. He was immediately transported to Khanpur Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Hospital officials have not yet released detailed information about his condition, but reports indicate that he remains under close medical observation.

Risks at Recreational Water Sites

The tragedy once again highlights the dangers associated with swimming in large reservoirs, dams, and other natural water bodies, particularly in areas with strong currents, sudden changes in depth, and limited safety measures.

Khanpur Dam is a popular destination for tourists and local visitors, especially during warm weather, attracting people for boating, sightseeing, and water-based activities. However, authorities have repeatedly warned visitors about the risks of entering deep or unsupervised areas of the water.

Rescue officials often advise the public to avoid swimming in unfamiliar sections of dams and lakes and to use proper safety equipment whenever engaging in water activities.

Another Drowning Incident in Sheikhupura

In a separate incident, rescue authorities reported that the body of an 18-year-old youth, identified as Tasawur Ali, was recovered from the Upper Chenab Canal in Sheikhupura four days after he drowned while bathing.

The prolonged search operation concluded when rescuers located and retrieved the body from the canal. The incident has added to growing concerns over water-related accidents during the summer season.

Calls for Greater Public Awareness

The latest tragedies have renewed calls for increased public awareness regarding water safety. Emergency responders stress that many drowning incidents occur when individuals attempt to rescue others without proper training or equipment.

Experts recommend that people immediately contact rescue services in emergencies rather than entering dangerous waters themselves, as untrained rescue attempts often result in multiple casualties.

Families and local communities have expressed grief over the loss of the two young men who sacrificed their lives while trying to save a friend, describing the incident as a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of caution around deep water.

Authorities continue to urge visitors to dams, canals, rivers, and lakes to follow safety guidelines and avoid unnecessary risks to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
