ISLAMABAD: The federal administration has issued a notification directing that markets and shopping malls in Islamabad will close at 8:00 PM, with the new regulations taking effect from June 1, 2026.

The decision is part of measures aimed at regulating commercial activity and managing energy consumption in the capital city.

Markets and Malls to Close at 8 PM

According to the official notification, all markets, shopping centers, and malls operating within Islamabad’s jurisdiction must cease business operations by 8:00 PM each day.

Authorities have instructed business owners and traders to comply with the revised operating hours, warning that violations may result in legal action under the applicable regulations.

Essential Health Services Exempted

The notification makes clear that essential healthcare facilities will remain exempt from the restrictions.

The following establishments are allowed to continue operating beyond the prescribed closing time:

  • Hospitals
  • Medical centers
  • Pharmacies
  • Medical stores

Officials said these exemptions are necessary to ensure uninterrupted access to healthcare services and emergency medical supplies for residents.

Petrol Pumps and CNG Stations Unaffected

The new rules do not apply to fuel stations.

According to the notification:

  • Petrol pumps will continue operating under their existing schedules.
  • CNG stations will also remain open as usual.

Authorities noted that fuel supply services are considered essential and therefore have been excluded from the early closure policy.

Restaurants and Grocery Stores to Close at 10 PM

While markets and malls must close by 8:00 PM, several other categories of businesses have been given extended operating hours.

Under the notification, the following establishments will be required to close by 10:00 PM:

  • Restaurants
  • Food outlets
  • Bakeries
  • Tandoors
  • Grocery stores
  • Vegetable shops
  • Fruit vendors

The administration said the extended timing for these businesses is intended to ensure the public can continue accessing food and daily necessities during evening hours.

Marriage Halls and Marquees Included

The notification also covers the wedding and event sector.

All:

  • Marriage halls
  • Wedding marquees

must conclude operations and close by 10:00 PM.

Authorities have directed venue operators to ensure compliance with the revised schedule.

Implementation Begins Immediately

The restrictions officially came into force on June 1, 2026, and enforcement agencies have been tasked with monitoring compliance across the capital.

Officials say the new operating hours are part of broader administrative measures and will remain in effect unless revised through a subsequent government notification.

Business associations and traders are expected to review the implications of the decision, while residents will need to adjust their shopping and recreational routines in accordance with the new timings.
