Lahore: Contract-based teachers at Government College University (GCU) Lahore are still waiting for their salaries despite the passage of five months, raising concerns among faculty members ahead of Eid holidays.
According to the affected teachers, they have not received their salaries for the past five months and are facing serious financial difficulties due to the prolonged delay.
The teachers expressed disappointment that even before Eid-ul-Adha they remained unpaid, making it difficult for them to manage household expenses and fulfill family responsibilities during the festive season.
Faculty members said the situation has caused mental stress and uncertainty, particularly for those who rely solely on their university income to support their families.
They also pointed out that the university is scheduled to close for Eid holidays starting today, yet no clear timeline has been provided regarding the release of pending salaries.
Some teachers stated that repeated requests and reminders to the university administration have not yet resulted in any practical solution.
On the other hand, the university administration says the issue is linked to audit objections that have temporarily halted salary payments for around 20 contract teachers.
A spokesperson for Government College University Lahore explained that the salaries are currently on hold because of objections raised during the audit process.
According to the spokesperson, once the audit-related objections are resolved, the pending salaries will be released immediately.
The university administration maintained that efforts are underway to address the matter as quickly as possible and ensure that all dues are paid without further delay.
However, teachers argue that administrative or audit procedures should not result in such long delays, especially when faculty members continue to perform their academic duties regularly.
Education experts say delays in salary payments can negatively affect the morale and performance of teachers, particularly those employed on contractual arrangements who already face job insecurity.
The issue has once again highlighted broader concerns regarding the working conditions and financial stability of contract employees in public sector educational institutions across Pakistan.
Teachers have urged the university administration and relevant authorities to resolve the matter urgently so that affected faculty members can receive their salaries before the extended holiday period.
Many students and academic circles have also expressed support for the teachers, saying educators should not have to face financial hardship while fulfilling their responsibilities in universities.
Government College University Lahore is one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious educational institutions, known for its academic history and contribution to higher education in Pakistan.
The ongoing salary issue has drawn attention on social media as well, with users calling for a swift resolution and fair treatment of teaching staff.
