QUETTA: At least two police personnel were injured in an explosion in Quetta’s Mian Ghundi area on Tuesday, police said.

Past attacks on police

Police personnel and installations across Balochistan have faced repeated attacks throughout 2026, ranging from targeted shootings and ambushes to assaults on police stations, attacks on officers guarding polio teams and the abduction of police recruits.

The year began with a wave of coordinated militant attacks across the province in late January and early February. In Quetta, militants attempted to target a police van on Sariab Road, while in Noshki, government facilities including the police station and police lines were attacked during a wider series of coordinated assaults across Balochistan.

In February, Assistant Sub-Inspector Musa Khan Mastoi was killed in Kachhi district when a police party returning from Sibi came under fire near Kumbti Bridge. In March, two members of Quetta’s Eagle Squad were killed in an ambush in the Eastern Bypass area, while armed men also attacked a police station in Jhal Magsi with rockets and heavy weapons.

Police stations remained frequent targets in April. Armed men attacked Pashtoonabad police station in Quetta, while later that month Dhadar and Noshki police stations were attacked, leaving one policeman dead and several others injured. A head constable was also killed when gunmen attacked a police checkpost in Pishin.

Police assigned to vaccination duties were also targeted. A constable guarding a polio team was killed in Dera Murad Jamali in April, while in September two policemen protecting female vaccinators were shot dead in Noshki.

In Khuzdar, a woman constable and a head constable were killed in April when a police team came under fire during a search operation. In May, another woman police constable was shot dead in a targeted attack in Turbat, while a Counter-Terrorism Department official was killed in the city days later.

June saw coordinated attacks on police installations in Qila Abdullah, Pishin and Duki. Armed men torched a police checkpost, attacked police stations and seized weapons, with one policeman killed in the Duki attack.

The deadliest attack on police came in July in Ziarat, where militants attacked a police post in the Mangi Dam area. The violence and subsequent clashes ultimately left 27 policemen dead, according to official figures. Later that month, a deputy superintendent of police was killed in an ambush in Barkhan.

Police facilities were again targeted in August and September, including attacks in Kharan, Pishin and Bhag. In September, a policeman was abducted and later killed following an attack in Khuzdar, while in October gunmen attacked a police station in Bostan.

On October 17, two policemen were killed in Nasirabad, while 20 police recruits were abducted in Kalat before being recovered safely. The latest incident came on October 20, when an explosion in Quetta’s Mian Ghundi area injured police personnel, adding to a year in which Balochistan police have repeatedly been targeted through shootings, roadside attacks, station assaults and kidnappings.
