Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah informed the Senate on Tuesday that the federal government was ready to invite all political parties and build consensus on counterterrorism.

Rana Sanaullah also urged the opposition to “set other demands aside”. “Even now, if all parties can agree to sit down to discuss this issue, then Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is willing to invite them and find a way forward (on counterterrorism) or how operations can be supported by the entire nation,” Rana Sanaullah said, urging political parties to put other demands aside and “stand united” in tackling terrorism.

He went on to criticise Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Mahmood Khan Achakzai. “He became the leader of the opposition after the speaker signed off on his appointment; however, he does not accept the speaker’s authority and is not even ready to meet the prime minister and has even refused to sit in the speaker’s chambers with the PM,” Sanaullah said.

He also assailed the members of the now non-functional PTI-led KP government for not attending apex committee meetings. “In 11 months, there was one apex committee meeting in which the KP CM was in attendance, and the way he was brought there, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi already spoke about it,” Sanaullah said.

Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry also invited all political parties to join hands in formulating a policy against terrorism.

He asked the parties not to undermine the country’s security for the sake of political manoeuvring.

Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said there are no two opinions regarding the war against terrorism.

During emergency, the federal government does not have the option to fail, asserted Tariq Fazal Chaudhry.

He clarified that it is a misconception if anyone believes that our involvement in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is driven by a “power game”.

He said the situation in Balochistan is also challenging.

Over 138,000 CNICs blocked in Balochistan

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhary informed the Senate today that the government has blocked over 138,000 Computerized National Identity Cards in Balochistan to curb illegal registrations.

Responding to a calling attention notice, he said most of these ID cards were previously acquired by Afghan nationals through fraudulent documents or illegal means. He added that eight thousand eight hundred and seventy-five CNICs have been blocked specifically in the Rakhshan and Makran divisions.

Talal Chaudhary assured the House that the government is reviewing all cases strictly on merit. He emphasized that maintaining the integrity of NADRA’s database is essential, as any compromise on national records directly affects the country’s credibility.

Speaking in the House, Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan said government is giving top priority to the development of infrastructure and road networks in Balochistan.

He informed that approximately one hundred billion rupees have been allocated from the Public Sector Development Programme funds for the construction of Pakistan Expressway (N-25).

He said the construction work on this highway project of strategic importance is progressing rapidly to ensure timely completion.

Abdul Aleem Khan said out of 164 billion rupees allocated under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), nearly 116 billion rupees are being spent on projects in Balochistan.

The Minister said the remaining amount is being utilized for various projects across the rest of the country.

Meanwhile, the Senate today passed The Area Study Centres (Amendment) Bill, 2026 and The Centre for Clinical Psychology Centres (Amendment) Bill, 2026.

Pakistan Post faces Rs12b annual loss

Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan told the Senate on Tuesday that Pakistan Post was facing an annual loss of around Rs12 billion, which could rise to Rs18 billion to Rs19 billion if pension expenses were included.

Replying to a question by Senator Shahadat Awan, he said that the government was preparing a policy to reduce the department’s costs. Options under consideration included reducing its workforce or privatising the service, and a detailed plan would be presented to the House later, he said.

The minister said that Pakistan Post had 9,707 units across the country, including 2,887 departmental post offices and 6,735 extra-departmental offices, along with 85 formations. It listed a province-wise staff strength of 15,051, while the minister said the department currently had around 22,000 employees.

Aleem Khan said staff expenses accounted for a large part of the department’s costs. He added that recruitment and staffing followed provincial quotas, with shares distributed among the provinces according to the prescribed criteria.
