Security forces have killed four terrorists in operations in Balochistan’s Kalat district, while an army major was martyred in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Gwadar district, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Monday.

According to the military’s media wing, intelligence reports indicated the presence of multiple hideouts of what it described as Indian-sponsored ‘Fitna Al Hindustan’ in the Jattakabad area of Kalat and Shadi Kaur in Pasni tehsil of Gwadar.

In the first operation, conducted in Jattakabad on 18 October, security forces engaged the reported terrorist location. Four terrorists were killed following an intense exchange of fire, while a large cache of arms and ammunition was recovered, the ISPR said.

In a separate operation in Shadi Kaur, security forces were conducting clearance activities when the lead force component was targeted by an IED.

Major Wajahat Waheed, 34, a resident of Lahore, was martyred in the blast, according to the ISPR.

The ISPR said sanitisation operations would continue to eliminate any other terrorists found in the areas.

It added that counter-terrorism efforts under the vision of “Azm-e-Istehkam”, approved by the Federal Apex Committee on the National Action Plan, would continue.

The military’s media wing said security forces and law enforcement agencies remained committed to eliminating foreign-sponsored terrorism from the country.

President, prime minister pay tribute

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to security forces for killing four terrorists in the operations and expressed grief over Major Waheed’s death.

The prime minister said the officer had sacrificed his life in defence of the country and expressed condolences to his family. He also reiterated the government’s resolve to continue the fight against what it described as foreign-sponsored terrorism.

President Asif Ali Zardari also commended security forces for the operations and expressed sorrow over the major’s martyrdom.

The president paid tribute to Major Waheed’s sacrifice and extended condolences to his family, saying security forces continued to make sacrifices for the country’s peace, stability and public safety.
