KARACHI: Lawyer Jibran Nasir on Monday demanded that the Sindh government make public the judicial commission’s report into the death of businessman Mir Raza Ali and provide a copy to his family, warning that they would approach the court if the report was withheld.
Speaking to the media outside the Sindh High Court alongside Mir Raza’s family, Nasir said the commission had submitted its report to the provincial government on October 15, but the family had been informed that the cabinet would decide whether to share it with them and make it public.
He questioned why the report was being kept confidential and urged the government not to align itself with the police over the matter.
“The commission has already given its findings. It has treated the government and the police separately while gathering information,” Nasir said, adding that the family had cooperated with the commission throughout its proceedings.
He said the family had written to Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah seeking the report but had yet to receive a response. If the findings were not provided, they would seek legal recourse, he added.
Nasir also renewed the family’s demand for a joint investigation team (JIT), saying the case had raised concerns about public safety and the handling of the initial police investigation.
Family opposes proposed super medical board
The lawyer also opposed efforts to constitute a super medical board to review the findings of the existing special medical board, warning against any administrative or executive move that could undermine its conclusions.
He said the family feared that another attempt could be made to portray Mir Raza’s death as suicide rather than murder. He called for an independent investigation by officers who had not previously been involved in the case.
The family has maintained that the investigation should establish the circumstances of Raza’s death and identify those responsible, while Nasir has repeatedly questioned alleged shortcomings in the police probe.
Report not on cabinet meeting agenda
The demand came ahead of a Sindh cabinet meeting scheduled for Tuesday. Earlier the chief minister’s spokesperson announced that it would be presented to the cabinet.
The government has said it will decide whether to release the report publicly and share it with the family.
The four-volume report was prepared by a judicial commission headed by Sindh High Court Justice Omar Sial. It contains the commission’s findings, witness statements and supporting material.
The commission concluded its proceedings on October 7 after recording statements from 49 witnesses during 15 hearings. Its inquiry examined the circumstances surrounding Raza’s death and possible negligence in the investigation.
Mir Raza’s death
Mir Raza Ali, a 25-year-old businessman, was found dead with a single bullet wound in a deserted area of Karachi’s Gulistan-i-Jauhar on July 29, a day after he went missing. Police initially registered the case as suicide.
During the commission’s proceedings, Justice Sial questioned the investigating officer over alleged lapses in the probe, while the family’s counsel raised concerns about the handling of evidence and the examination of CCTV footage.
The commission’s report has not yet been made public, and its conclusions regarding the circumstances of Raza’s death remain unknown.
