ISLAMABAD: A lawyer for former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur told an Islamabad court on Saturday that his client had already been arrested, as proceedings in an audio leak case against him were adjourned until November 27.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Hakim Khan Bukhari heard the case at the District and Sessions Courts in Islamabad. Gandapur’s lawyer, Raja Zahoor, appeared before the court, while co-accused Farooq was also present.
During the hearing, Zahoor said Gandapur was scheduled to appear in court on Saturday but had already been arrested. He argued that issuing fresh arrest warrants would serve no purpose if his client was already in custody.
The court could not record witness statements because Gandapur was unavailable. It subsequently adjourned the hearing until November 27.
The audio leak case against Gandapur was registered at Golra police station in Islamabad. Legal proceedings against him in the case are ongoing.
PTI leaders’ arrests after emergency rule
Gandapur was last seen in public around the time the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) began its long march, before the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. His convoy turned back while attempting to join the march, after which he reportedly went out of public view.
The federal government imposed emergency and governor’s rule in the province on October 11, citing a lack of cooperation from the PTI-led provincial government in the fight against terrorism. The move came amid escalating tensions between the federal government and the opposition party.
Under the measures announced, executive powers of the provincial government were transferred to the governor, while an 11-member advisory council was constituted to oversee provincial affairs.
The measures also placed 12 districts under a federal administrative arrangement overseen by the governor. These include Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Kurram, Orakzai, Upper South Waziristan, Lower South Waziristan and North Waziristan.
Earlier, State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry confirmed to Reuters on Monday that former KP chief minister Sohail Afridi and some members of his cabinet had been taken into “preventive custody” following the imposition of emergency rule.
“Yes, I can confirm that the chief minister (Sohail Afridi) and some of his cabinet members have been taken into preventive custody,” Chaudhry told Reuters.
The PTI subsequently claimed that several of its lawmakers had been arrested as part of a crackdown against party leaders following the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule.
Two days ago, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq issued production orders for lawmakers Mian Ghaus Muhammad, Adil Khan Bazi and Muhammad Jamal Ahsan Khan to enable them to attend a session of the lower house of parliament.
On October 14, the speaker had also issued production orders for Sanaullah Khan Masti Khel and Dawar Khan Kundi under Rule
