Ten militants were killed and six security personnel were martyred in separate engagements in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa between Sept 15 and 17, the military’s media wing said on Thursday, as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to the security forces and those who lost their lives.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), six militants were killed during an intelligence-based operation in North Waziristan district following reports of their presence in the area.

The military’s media wing said security forces effectively engaged the militants’ position, resulting in an intense exchange of fire in which six militants were killed.

In a separate encounter in Hangu district, security forces killed four more militants, the ISPR said.

The military identified the militants as members of what it described as “Indian-sponsored Fitna-al-Khwarij” and said weapons and ammunition had been recovered from those killed. It added that the militants had been involved in multiple terrorist activities in the area.

Meanwhile, six security personnel were martyred when an improvised explosive device (IED) targeted a security forces convoy on Sept 17, according to the ISPR.

Following the engagements, sanitisation operations were under way to eliminate any remaining militants in the area, the statement said.

The ISPR said security forces and law-enforcement agencies were continuing counter-terrorism operations under the government’s “Azm-i-Istehkam” initiative, approved by the Federal Apex Committee on the National Action Plan.

PM pays tribute to fallen personnel

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to the security forces for killing the 10 militants and expressed condolences to the families of the six personnel killed during the operations.

The prime minister paid “rich tribute” to the soldiers who were killed while fighting militants and said their sacrifices would not go in vain.

“Our brave sons who sacrificed their lives for the defence, peace and security of the country are heroes of the entire nation,” he said.

PM Shehbaz said the sacrifices of the fallen personnel would serve as a guiding light for the nation.

He reiterated that operations against terrorism under Azm-i-Istehkam would continue “with full force” until the menace was eliminated.

The ISPR also paid tribute to the security personnel who lost their lives and said their sacrifices reinforced the forces’ commitment to safeguarding the country.
