ISLAMABAD: The federal government has imposed a ban on the import of goods produced wholly or partially through forced labor, marking a significant step toward aligning Pakistan’s trade practices with international labor standards.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Commerce, the import of such goods will now be strictly prohibited, regardless of the country or entity involved in their production. The move is aimed at discouraging exploitative labor practices and ensuring ethical sourcing in international trade.

The notification specifies that any products manufactured either entirely or in part through forced labor will fall under the ban. Authorities will identify relevant countries, organizations, and goods based on criteria set by the International Labour Organization (ILO).

In cases where imports are sourced from regions flagged for potential labor violations, importers will be required to provide documentary evidence or certification confirming that the goods were not produced using forced labor.

Officials say the decision reflects Pakistan’s commitment to upholding global labor rights and improving transparency within its import framework. It is also expected to strengthen compliance with international trade requirements, particularly in markets where ethical sourcing standards are increasingly enforced.

Trade experts note that the implementation of the policy will require effective monitoring and verification mechanisms to ensure compliance and prevent circumvention. They also emphasize the need for awareness among importers and businesses to adapt to the new regulations.

The ban could have broader implications for supply chains, as companies may need to reassess sourcing strategies and ensure proper certification from suppliers.

Overall, the measure signals a shift toward more responsible trade practices, aligning Pakistan with global efforts to eliminate forced labor from international supply chains
