Power Breakdown at Dhabeji Pumping Station Raises Fears of Water Shortage in Karachi

A power breakdown at the Dhabeji Pumping Station has raised concerns about potential disruption in water supply to Karachi, adding to the city’s ongoing water shortage challenges.

According to a spokesperson for the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), the برق failure at the pumping station may affect the overall water distribution system. Officials reported that back pressure in the system has already impacted two major supply lines.

K-Electric, the city’s power utility, confirmed that the issue was caused by a fault in the main cable at the Dhabeji facility. Despite the fault, electricity supply to 18 out of 22 pumping motors remained operational. The company further stated that alternative arrangements have been made to ensure power supply to the remaining four motors.

However, concerns persist as any disruption at Dhabeji—one of Karachi’s primary water supply hubs—can significantly impact water availability across multiple علاقوں of the city.

The situation is further compounded by ongoing maintenance work. Earlier, the Water Corporation had shut down seven pumps for 48 hours starting April 25 to connect a new pipeline, while two additional pumps were already offline for a week. These measures had already reduced water supply in several parts of Karachi.

Officials warn that if the current issue is not resolved promptly, residents may face intensified water shortages in the coming days.
