Chairman of the Pakistan Ulema Council and Coordinator of the National Peace Committee, Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi, has received the Hubert Walter Award for Reconciliation and Interfaith Cooperation 2026 at a ceremony held at the historic Lambeth Palace in London.
Ashrafi received the award on Friday in the Great Hall of Lambeth Palace during a ceremony recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to peace, reconciliation and cooperation between religious communities.
The award was presented by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, in recognition of Ashrafi’s decades-long efforts to promote peace, moderation, interfaith and intra-faith harmony, minority rights and peaceful coexistence. His work against extremism, terrorism and sectarian violence was also cited among the reasons for the recognition.
The Hubert Walter Award is one of the Lambeth Awards and is presented in recognition of outstanding contributions to reconciliation and interfaith cooperation.
According to details released by the Archbishop of Canterbury’s office, Ashrafi was among the notable individuals selected this year for recognition across five different Lambeth Award categories. He was specifically honored with the Hubert Walter Award for Reconciliation and Interfaith Cooperation.
The award represents significant international recognition of Ashrafi’s long-standing work in peacebuilding, religious diplomacy and interfaith dialogue. Over several decades, he has been involved in efforts to bring religious and sectarian communities closer together, promote mutual respect, advocate for the rights of minorities and vulnerable groups, and encourage peaceful coexistence.
His work has also focused on combating extremism, terrorism and sectarian violence while maintaining his religious identity and Islamic affiliation.
Ashrafi has previously received the OIC Global Peace Award in recognition of his contributions to peace, harmony and cooperation. The OIC Global Peace Award and the Hubert Walter Award are separate international honors, reflecting recognition of his work within the Muslim world as well as the wider international community.
Ashrafi is also a member of the Supreme Council of the Muslim World League, Secretary General of the International Organization of Haramain Councils, and a member of the International Muslim Forum. He is additionally associated with several international Islamic and interfaith organizations.
The latest honor at Lambeth Palace places his work on reconciliation and interfaith engagement among the contributions recognized internationally through the 2026 Lambeth Awards.
